Aldi has taken the crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket this month. It beat Lidl by just a few pence on a standard 75-item basket. The figures, released this week, show Aldi back on top after briefly losing out in July. According to Which?, Aldi “regained the title” after Lidl nudged ahead.

The race has been close. In July, Lidl’s basket came in slightly cheaper—especially if shoppers used the Lidl Plus loyalty card. But in August, Aldi moved back into first place. According to Grocery Gazette, Aldi is “once again” the UK’s cheapest supermarket.

For bigger shops, the picture changes. Large trolley comparisons of nearly 200 items often leave Aldi and Lidl out because they stock fewer branded goods. In those cases, Asda usually comes out cheapest, according to Which? reviews.

Morrisons is also trying to win back customers. It has cut prices on around 650 everyday items, from meat to household products, with reductions averaging 18%. According to retail reports, the cuts will last several weeks, though they haven’t changed the overall rankings yet.

What does this mean for shoppers? Aldi is cheapest for the regular weekly basket. Lidl is a very close second and can be even cheaper with its loyalty card. Asda is best value if you’re filling a very large trolley with branded goods. Morrisons may be worth checking for short-term savings during its discount drive.

Bottom line: Aldi leads right now, Lidl is snapping at its heels, Asda remains strong for big branded shops, and Morrisons is making noise with temporary deals. Shoppers have more choice than ever, but Aldi remains the one to beat.
