At Ermita San Salvador, another road from Arles joins the route from Roncesvalles over the Somport pass. A short detour takes you to the twelfth-century church at Eunate, 3 km away on the Monreal Las Campanas road. It is an octagonal building surrounded by a series of arches. It was a burial place for pilgrims. While most pilgrims completed the journey safely, some succumbed to illness and others were fatally injured in accidents.
Accommodation:
Bank, restaurant, panaderia. Restuarant Ibarberoa is behind the church. Hospederia Arnotegui; Casa Pepe restaurant, not easy to identify but worth the enquiry. It is noted for its tasty, homemade meals.
Directions:
Enter the village by the Camino Roncesvalles. Proceed straight to Calle San Juan; turn right into Calle Julian Gayarre, left down a tree-lined road with a school (left) to church (public garden on its right). Continue diagonally through archway and go straight, following road as it bends to right passing fountain opposite. At the Ermita San Salvador (left) the road becomes a rough track at the side of the farm (right). Keep straight on above vines (to left) until you come to the main road. Cross, turn left down footpath through allotments. A wall and fencing run parallel to road. Rejoin road by hotel. There is a modern statue of a pilgrim at the junction of the Caminos Frances and Aragones. Turn left along the N111 for 300m to Puente le Reina (Gares).
Cyclists can turn off the N111 immediately after the summit of the Puerto del Perdon and enter a quiet road through Uterga and Muruzabal.
2km to Puente Ia Reina
